A Letter from Nick Ovenden – October 2024 Newsletter

GreatLIFE Community,

LIGHT BULB MOMENT! I have spent the past several years looking for a variety of ways to continue learning. One of these ways is through getting newsletters from people who I trust and enjoy learning from. A few weeks ago, I opened up a newsletter where the author (Brian Stroh) told a story about a time he was given a task of drawing a circle to represent the world’s knowledge and then to color in the percentage of the world’s knowledge he believe he’d learned. As they went around the room, students revealed various size parts of the circle being filled in. Que, MY LIGHTBULB MOMENT. I spent the majority of my life working at learning as much as I can in order to fill in as much of the circle as possible. What if I was looking at it all wrong? What if the goal ISN’T to fill in the circle at all but rather to grow the size of the circle as big as we can? What I mean by this is the old quote “the more you learn, the more you realize you don’t know.” Maybe I completely missed the boat on this concept as a student, but for me, this concept and realization was one of the most frustrating and exciting things to think about. It allowed me to not only be OK with not filling in my circle, but rather to seek to find new ways to expand it. Here are some things I have done over the past few years to continue to expand my circle:

  • Taking on a new hobby every year that is out of my comfort zone.
  • Visiting new places, mainly locally, but I would love to do more international travel with my family in the future.
  • Intentionally seeking out people with different backgrounds/friend groups to get their understanding of a particular topic.
  • Spending time reflecting and journaling on the “lessons learned” and being strategic with how I can apply that new knowledge in my life.

I still consider myself very “green” in my quest to continue to expand my circle of knowledge. I would love to hear about ways you are expanding your circle of knowledge and see how we can continue to grow together.

GreatLIFE Update:

This October, we are excited to work with Feeding South Dakota, local businesses and YOU, in an effort to “fill the pantry” by hosting a food drive for the entire month. As the number of kids and families that are struggling with food insecurities continue to raise in our community, we are hopeful that we will have our largest donation drive yet. You will see many food drive boxes around the community, including boxes to donate to at all of our GreatLIFE locations.

We have had an incredible start to Fall so far and the extended forecast continues to look amazing. Many of you have been taking advantage of the beautiful weather as we had our busiest September on the golf courses yet. Even with the warm temperatures, our new addition to the Harrisburg fitness center has seen a number of new faces come in to “play” in the new space as well. We have also been hard at work to solidify our 2025 list of places where you will be able to take advantage of GreatLIFE pricing through our Member Benefit program. If there are other places, you’d like to see be a part of the program, please let me know and I will touch base with them. Click here to check out the most up to date list of places where you can get a discount just for being a member of the GreatLIFE!

BOOK CLUB:

This month’s book came complimentary of a local business owner who recommended we read it together in September. I really enjoyed, The Go-Giver by Bob Burg, because it reminded me so much about what I love about our community. I have been so fortunate to have met countless leaders in our community that give of their time and resources without an expectation of anything in return. I believe this mindset of serving others, has been the catalyst to the growth we’ve seen and experienced over the past several years in our community. Anyway, here are my top 3 takeaways from the book:

The Go-Giver, written by Bob Burg and John David Mann, is a business parable that emphasizes the importance of giving and selflessness in achieving success. The story follows Joe, a young salesman who learns valuable lessons from a series of mentors about the power of generosity in business and life.

Three Main Takeaways:

  1. The Law of Value: Your true worth is determined by how much more you give in value than you take in payment. Focusing on providing value fosters deeper relationships and loyalty.
  2. The Law of Compensation: Your income is directly proportional to the number of people you serve and the extent to which you serve them. Expanding your impact leads to greater rewards.
  3. The Law of Influence: Your influence is determined by how abundantly you place other people’s interests first. Building trust and relationships can create a strong network that benefits everyone involved.

NEXT MONTH’S BOOK:

Crucial Conversations by Patterson, Grenny, McMillan and Switzler

POSITIVE THOUGHT:
