It’s not often we can say this in early February: Get ready to head to the golf course.
“It’s amazing,” GreatLIFE vice president of golf Jason Sudenga said. “It’s very, very seldom we are playing golf in January and February.”
But Jan. 31 brought the first day of the year for Fox Run Golf Course in Yankton, where 66 golfers headed out in part because “they wanted to be able to say they were playing golf in January in South Dakota,” Sudenga said. “It was fun.”
This Saturday will bring another chance to golf at Fox Run, which will open with carts and tee times at 11 a.m.

“There’s no snow in Yankton, and the conditions are good on the course,” Sudenga said.
“Fox Run is a very nice, well-maintained golf, and it’s very playable. It’s not going to be a course where you’ll lose a lot of golf balls. If you’ve not been there, you’ll find the greens are pretty big and there’s not a lot of slope.”
With the forecast for the coming week looking favorable, GreatLIFE will assess the conditions and decide soon what else will be available.
“In Sioux Falls, it will depend on the snow and ice on the courses,” Sudenga said. “We have to make sure there’s not a lot of snow cover so people can get around and not have to navigate through piles and drifts. If we can open, we will open because we know members want to play and we want them to be able to play.”

“I’ve received quite a few phone calls and emails from members who are golfing there and tell me the courses are in great shape,” Sudenga said. “They were when I was down there in December, and they’re still in really great shape. They’re fun courses to play.”
